Snapshot

Science is at the heart of everything we do at Google DeepMind. From the beginning, we took inspiration from science to build better algorithms. Now, we want to use our toolkit to accelerate scientific discovery. Projects like AlphaFold and AlphaTensor show the promise of this approach. By bringing together specialists with backgrounds e.g. in machine learning, physics, chemistry, biology, we're optimistic that we can build new methods that will push the boundaries of what is possible and help solve the biggest problems facing humanity.

About Us

Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity's most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we're a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in this field. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.

The Role

As a Research Scientist in the Science Program, you will use your research expertise to collaborate with domain experts and machine learning scientists within our natural science programs. In particular, you will be working closely with the Quantum Chemistry and Materials teams.

Key responsibilities:

  • Engage with existing research efforts in the Science Program to solve key challenges using your computational chemistry and/or materials science expertise.
  • Collaborate with researchers and machine learning engineers to identify and develop novel machine learning approaches tailored to natural sciences, and in particular quantum chemistry and solid state physics.
  • Report and present research findings and developments (including status and results) clearly and efficiently both internally and externally, verbally and in writing.
  • Suggest and engage in team collaborations to meet research goals for the wider science programme.
  • About You

In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist in the Quantum Chemistry and Materials team at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

    Minimum qualifications

  • Quantitative skills in mathematics and physics.
  • PhD or equivalent research experience.
  • Track record of building new software to turn research ideas into efficient and maintainable code.
  • Track record of contributing to advances in computational chemistry, electronic structure methods, or condensed matter physics.
  • Experience using quantum chemistry code (e.g. PySCF, QuantumESPRESSO, GPAW, VASP).
  • Preferred qualifications

  • Experience contributing to quantum chemistry code (e.g. PySCF, QuantumESPRESSO, GPAW, VASP).
  • Experience in applying machine learning techniques.
  • Passion for accelerating science using innovative technologies!
  • Competitive salary applies.

Applications close on Thursday 5th October at 5pm BST and will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
